Northern Mockingbird

Mimus polyglottos

Video/Observer: Lis

What it looks like:

Drab grey all over, with paler belly. When it took off to fly, a striking white stripe was visible on both wings across a block of very dark grey. Up close it had a dark grey (almost sooty) "mask" across its eyes.

Observed Habitat/Behavior

Spotted in a residential neighborhood in the early afternoon on an overcast April day. It was heard before it was sighted. It was sitting in a tree singing and then flew to a power line overhead where it continued to sing. In this video you can hear its song in which it mimics other local bird species including American Robin, Red-bellied Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch, and Northern Cardinal.

Natural History

Include any background information about the organism that you know and can back up with either online or written sources. This helpful information is something you didn't discover yourself (even if you observed signs that support it), because it is based on observations researchers made about many individuals or an entire population. This may include helpful information about species diet, life cycle/breeding, habitat, current range in North America, or predators/threats.

You must include the source of your information. Even if you own the knowledge, you must provide a source that supports your research.
